WOW! My second grade artists are so talented! We have been working on a fall pumpkin picture. Last week the students followed along with me as we drew two, overlapping pumpkins in the grass. They then traced their pencil drawing with a line of glue. The glue dried to leave the perfect outline for our chalk pastels. Yes, chalk. Messy, smeary, dusty, colorful chalk. I showed the students my finished example and they were able to find four different colors that I used to create my pumpkin. I asked them why they thought I used four colors and they decided that using lighter colors at the top shows that the moon light is shining onto the pumpkin and using darker colors on the bottom is where the shadow is. Right on, 2nd grade!
I demonstrated how to apply the chalk pastels to the picture and blend it with one finger. After some oohs and awes, they got down to work themselves and created their own masterpiece. I could tell they were pretty impressed with themselves and I was impressed with them too. Check out their beautiful work below. (Projects will be posted to Artsonia next week).
